Anchor care homes provide person-centred care for people living with dementia making it possible for them to continue doing the things they love in a caring and supportive environment.

A carer with a resident looking at an iPadUnderstanding residents’ backgrounds, hobbies, interests and personal tastes is an essential first step in enhancing lives – helping residents feel at home from the first day they start living with us.

Our team of dementia experts support homes to deliver the highest quality and standards of dementia care, where a person-centred approach is embedded into every element of a residents' life. Anchor care homes dementia team supported the largest study of its kind into the use of iPads in care homes, conducted with the world-renowned Association for Dementia Studies at the University of Worcester.

iPads and dementia care

Research published by Anchor care homes and the University of Worcester found that iPads enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia. This research shows that with the right approach, using iPads helps deliver person-centred care and a range of positive outcomes for people living with dementia in care homes including increased interaction, greater inclusion and improved communication with relatives.

Anchor-Inspires-350.jpgWhilst many of our residents, especially those living with a dementia, may be relatively new to using the iPad (or other technology) our carers are able to identify and select suitable applications such as; sensory, memory association, musical and reminiscence areas to help calm, engage and evoke meaningful conversations. iPads are one aspect of how we use technology to deliver high quality standards of dementia care.

Caring colleagues

In our care homes, colleagues are trained to a high standard in awareness of the impact of dementia, providing personal care, and being flexible in anticipating and meeting individual needs. We recognised that everyone’s experience of dementia is unique and provide access specialist dementia support and guidance together with bespoke training to ensure all our residents can live well with dementia.

A carer and two residentsOur colleagues are dedicated to not just providing individual care, but to forming individual friendships with residents. Learning about the residents’ life experiences are the foundations on which we build our care and support package. We think carefully about matching carers who provide one-to-one support trying wherever possible to bring together those who share similar interests, helping them to create a strong connection based on shared experiences and reminiscence.

Safe living

Our homes are comfortable and welcoming and designed to provide easy orientation, yet in a safe environment. Residents’ health and well-being is important and our outdoor spaces are created as an integral part of the home environment. We have a team of highly-skilled and qualified colleagues trained in dementia support.

Wellness and engagement activities

We dedicate meaningful time to resident activities, stimulating the senses with arts and crafts, exercise and reminiscence, through to using interactive technology, such as iPads and interactive projectors.

We also recognise that residents will have lived active lives before they move in so whether those interests are gardening or cooking, we encourage them to continue doing the things that they love.
