An interest in historical dress led to a wonderful creation
Brian Henderson of Lakehead Court decided to take steps to improve his personal wellbeing and make new friends. Having always had an interest in history, he began visiting Tullie House Museum in Carlisle where he could learn about and marvel at the historical artefacts.
He became especially interested in the period clothing and how it was made, so much so he bought a tailor’s dummy and a sewing machine with the aim of reproducing a traditional Georgian dress.
Brian began to volunteer at the museum to learn more about how the clothes were made. This then helped him in creating his own period dress. Having never used a sewing machine before let alone made any clothing, Brian managed to create an impressive dress that looks like it was plucked straight from the Georgian era.
The impact volunteering had on Brian was overwhelmingly positive. He managed to expand his knowledge of history, learn how to use a sewing machine, and harness his creative skills to make a wonderful Georgian style dress.
The benefits of volunteering at any age
Speaking of his volunteering experience, Brian said:
After visiting Tullie House Museum in Carlisle, I fell in love with the collection of 18 Century fashion. I decided to make a dress from 1760. I received a lot of encouragement from Tullie House Museum staff and bought a sewing machine, a mannequin and fabric.
Getting to know the management at Tullie House Museum I enquired if I could be a volunteer. There was no problem so after my induction course I am now a Gallery Engager. I received a lot of encouragement, and this was a major factor!
You’re never too old to volunteer.
We really believe in encouraging residents to follow their hobbies and continue learning in later life as the benefits to wellbeing are invaluable. We even have our very own Be Well service to enhance the lives of our residents and encourage learning and wellness.
Brian certainly gets a lot of enjoyment from volunteering, and it has unlocked new interests and skills. We look forward to seeing what he will create next!
