How Anchor manages reports of domestic abuse and supports residents

Domestic abuse

- Click the orange QUICK EXIT button if you need to leave this site immediately -

Anchor’s approach to managing domestic abuse is to identify, support and signpost residents to relevant specialist agencies, championing the voice of the resident.

We have worked with resident groups to create this page.

Purple ribbonWhat is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse refers to abusive behaviour between individuals who are 16 years old or older and have a personal connection to each other. The personal connection can include:

  • Intimate partners (even in the early stages of a relationship, such as on a first date)
  • Family members
  • In-laws
  • Step or half-siblings
  • 1st cousins
  • Kinship carers (carers with a family or intimate connection)
  • Former or ex-intimate partners

Behaviour is considered abusive if it includes:

  • Verbal abuse
  • Physical or sexual abuse
  • Violent or threatening behaviour
  • Controlling or coercive behaviour
  • Economic/financial abuse
  • Honour based abuse
  • Psychological, emotional, or other forms of abuse

Abuse can be a single incident or a course of conduct over time.

How can residents report domestic abuse?

Anchor residents can report domestic abuse in several ways:

  • Online: Complete our online reporting form here
  • Location Manager: Residents can also report to their Location Manager in person, over the phone, by email, or by letter
  • Email: Send an email to [email protected] with "ASB" in the subject line. Your report will be assessed by the Customer Experience Hub and forwarded to the most appropriate member of staff
  • Phone: Call 0800 731 2020

What support can Anchor offer to residents subjected to domestic abuse?

Anchor offers a victim-focused approach and will provide you with support. You will have the option to:

  • Choose whether or not to report the abuse to the police
  • Be referred to specialist domestic abuse services for support

Additionally, Anchor can:

  • Support you to consider your housing options
  • Provide temporary accommodation in Guest Rooms as a short-term safe space
  • Maintain your confidentiality unless you give explicit consent to disclose information

Support may also include sharing information with other professionals including emergency services, obtaining specialist advice, and exploring legal options if needed.

How will Anchor investigate reports of domestic abuse and what steps can Anchor take to address it?

We will take appropriate action based on the situation and involve you in this process.

If the person causing the abuse is also a resident:

  • Information may be gathered (e.g. incident diaries, witness statements)
  • Legal action can be taken, including injunctions and possession proceedings
  • Advice and warnings can be issued to the person causing the abuse

If the person causing the abuse is not an Anchor resident:

  • We can help with changing locks, securing the premises, issuing banning letters, or securing an order to exclude the person causing the abuse
