Steve Forrester

Health, Safety and Fire Advisor

I have worked for Anchor for over three years now working within the Property and Assets team as a Health, Safety, and Fire Advisor, initially for the Care Home portfolio and more recently this has extended to covering Anchor’s Extra Care sites. The company has allowed me to develop my own skills but also working within our team has enabled me to develop with others around me. The sharing of ideas and using a collaborative approach to learning helps to support best practice; sharing ideas and approach to delivery of health and safety within the locations we cover. The company have invested in my knowledge and skill set by organising external training courses that we have attended, this has not only improved my knowledge base but I have been able to pass this information onto the locations that I cover and improve care home and scheme manager’s understanding of health, safety and fire and how it affects them and the residents they look after. Within my role I have had the pleasure of being able to deliver awareness training at the locations I look after, this has given me the chance to meet and interact with care colleagues and various levels of management. The insight I get into the individual roles enables me to improve what we deliver and listen to feedback provided and adapt where necessary. Delivering the safety coordinator training and being closely involved with the development of its content gives me encouragement and it brings out the best in the team. Watching colleagues develop and becoming safety coordinators delivering training for the first time is extremely rewarding; it demonstrates that the opportunities are available within their work environments to progress and achieve whatever they want. Helping them do this is a major motivator to improve and help others develop and I get great satisfaction out of this. The team approach that exists within the whole of the Property and Assets team is second to none, with help or guidance at just a phone call away. The relationships that are being built enables us all to understand each other’s roles, and how as a team we all work together. With regular meetings and get togethers this will only go from strength to strength.

Health, Safety and Fire Advisor

Since joining Anchor as a regional Health, Safety and Fire Advisor I’ve found my role has been very satisfying. The work has not been without its challengers but the greater the challenge the greater the reward. Working closely with all Anchor teams providing both technical and day-to-day advice and support gives me the opportunity to meet colleagues from across the organisation. There is no greater feeling than nurturing others in their knowledge and understanding of health, safety and fire. What I especially like about my role is the autonomy to plan my own diary, giving me the flexibility to quickly react to new and emerging priorities, while maintaining the all-important work life balance. There are never two days the same with the diversity of our estates and locations, from sitting in traffic to the rolling countryside. The opportunities for my own professional and personal development is second to none; the quality training provided by recognised leading industry experts like the Fire Protection Association and Colin Todd associates, really makes a difference. Although I work from home, there is never a moment when I feel isolated because there is a great team spirit and can-do attitude; the team is always available for support every step of the way. There are regular team meetings with our manager to discuss changes in policy, personnel, and any work-related issues as well as one to one to sessions to discuss my own personal development and plan. I was initially unsure whether or not to apply for the role when it was advertised as my skill set did not match the criteria, however after all the training, support and encouragement I have received to support me in my role, I would encourage anyone to click the apply button.
