The Queen has written to thank residents living at a Bradford care home for holding a party to celebrate her 90th birthday.
Helped by Team Leader Louise Barnard, four older people living at Anchor’s Ashcroft care home in Kelvin Way wrote to Her Majesty to let her know that they had held a special birthday party to mark this landmark celebration.
Donald Blackburn, 93, Susan Lynch, 74, Tony Weatherill, 79, and Rita Castle, 86, are such big Royal Family fans they spent time putting the letter together so the Queen would realise the strength of feeling for her despite being based miles away in Bradford.
To everyone’s surprise, the residents received a letter back from the Queen this week.
In it the Queen’s lady in waiting wrote: “Her Majesty was touched to hear that Donald, Tony, Susan and Rita all raised a glass to toast The Queen’s health.
“Her Majesty greatly appreciated your kind thoughts for her at this time, and I am to thank you very much once again for writing as you did.”
Ashcroft Manager Mishel Ingle said the residents held a party in the home’s new supported living service which enables eight people to live as independently as possible while benefiting from having care home staff on site if needed.
Friends and family joined the residents for the tea dance party with everyone raising a glass to wish the Queen all the best.
She added: “The residents were over the moon to see The Queen’s response and one gentleman was close to tears. The Queen means a lot to the residents because she has ruled Britain for more than 64 years and has been a wonderful ambassador for the country.”
Donald, who has lived at Ashcroft since August last year, said he never expected The Queen to reply to their letter.
He said: “Most people are used to getting letters through the post from family and friends so you can imagine our reaction when we were told the letter was from the Queen!
“We were really surprised and pleased to receive the card. It means so much to us because we never expected a reply. The Queen represents everything good in this country and I respect her a lot.
“It’s thanks to Louise and the rest of the staff at Anchor’s Ashcroft care home that we had such a lovely surprise waiting for us.”
