Mr Ralph Neale celebrates his 100th birthday at Mayflower Court Care Home in Southampton where he has lived since May 2016.

Ralph was born in Southampton and educated at Taunton’s School which is now known as the Richard Taunton Sixth Form College.

Upon leaving school, Ralph trained as an ophthalmic optician in London. Ralph enlisted in the Army during September 1939 just five days after marrying his child-hood sweetheart Dulcie. During a successful army career, Ralph was promoted to the rank of Captain and served in North Africa and the Italian Campaign.

After returning to Southampton, he established Ralph Neale Opticians in Bedford Place in September 1956. This business is still operating under new management.

Ralph was an active member of several local clubs; Southampton Round Table, Southampton 41 Club, Southampton Rotary Club, Southampton Masonic Lodge and the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Ralph was a very keen yachtsman and during his retirement, he successfully sailed across the channel on several occasions.

Ralph celebrates his 100th year with his three children, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. One of Ralph's sons, David, wrote to Sue the Home Manager to thank her for her support and organisation of Ralph's birthday celebrations.
