A Newcastle pensioner has been shortlisted for a Community Champion award. June Anderson, who lives at Anchor’s Shafto Court in Old Benwell Village, was nominated by neighbours for always going the extra mile helping her community.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

June is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Community Champion Award. She said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated. It is important to have a good community spirit. I like organising trips and activities for Shafto Court and the local community to get involved in.”

June is the driving force behind Shafto Court’s social activities, having championed the formation of a social committee and brought in members of the local community. She secured a grant from Greggs Foundation to fund regular events like coffee mornings, bingo, knitting clubs and bric-a-brac sales. She

Scheme manager Vikki Tittley, who appreciates the difference June makes to the community, said: “June is a real star. She deserves to win, as she always gives up their time organising trips and activities. June tirelessly donates her time and energy to the local community for the benefit of others.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
