A Manchester grandmother has been shortlisted for a gardening award. Brenda Smith, who lives at Anchor’s Earls Lodge in Failsworth, was nominated by neighbours for her hard work in the communal gardens.
Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.
Mrs Smith thrilled to be shortlisted for the Green Fingered Customer Award. She said: “I am over the moon to be up for this award. I love gardening as it keeps me fit, and it’s great to see others getting enjoyment from our communal gardens.”
Heather Buttrick, Anchor’s housing scheme manager, said: “Brenda has looked after the garden for the last few years and made it a lovely little oasis for tenants, guests, family and staff.
“This year she has created memory pots with some of the tenants, putting a favourite plant into a specially decorated pot as a reminder of a loved one.
“Everyone appreciates the hard work Brenda does - tenants love sitting out on the patio and visitors often comment on its beauty and peacefulness. We enjoy the garden all year around thanks to Brenda.”
A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
