A tenant from Failsworth has been shortlisted for a Best Neighbour award. Bob Rathborne, 76, who lives at Anchor’s Earls Lodge in Albert Street West, was nominated by 60 friends and neighbours for always going the extra mile.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Mr Rathborne is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Best Neighbour Award. He said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated – and by so many people, I’m just blown away. It is important to have good neighbours. I like to help others, whether it is to be there with a cup of tea and a chat or to go and do someone’s shopping.”

Neighbour Ann Taylor, who is thankful for the help Bob gives to her, said: “Bob is the heart and soul of our community at Earls Lodge, and plays a huge role in making it such a happy place to live.

“Bob is always on hand to help. If someone’s ill, it is Bob who does their shopping, and if they go into hospital he visits them and makes sure they are okay. If tenants leave Earls Lodge to go into care homes, they are not forgotten; Bob visits everyone.

“Bob is also a member of Esther Rantzen’s Silver Line to help lonely older people, and he is great with the children who visit, always making time to give them a cake and a drink.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
