A grandmother from Guildford has been highly commended for a Carer of the Year award. Joan Webb, 82, who lives at Anchor’s Chasefield Close in Burpham, was nominated by Arthur Wild for tirelessly caring for her neighbours.
Over 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in May 2014 with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.
Joan Webb, who has lived at Chasefield Close for nearly two years, is thrilled to be highly commended in the Carer category. She said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated by Arthur. I like caring for others, even if it’s just picking up a newspaper or helping with the shopping. I like to help those who are less able as I would hope others would do the same when I am less able.”
Neighbour Arthur Wild, 87, who is thankful for the help Joan gives to him, said: “Joan deserves to win the Carer of the Year Award. She fetches my newspaper for me almost every day and never expects any thanks; she just likes to be kind. Joan is always willing to help anyone in the close and is like an extra lifeline.”
A customer panel came together before Christmas to judge those nominated, and winners of the six categories will be announced at the end of January.
