Tenants from Morecambe have won a Carer of the Year award. Margaret and Peter Whelan, who live at Anchor’s Monkswood Avenue in Bare, were nominated by their neighbour Judith Brooks for tirelessly caring for others.

Over 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in May 2014 with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.

Mr and Mrs Whelan, who have lived at Monkswood Avenue for nearly 20 years, are thrilled to receive the award. Mr Whelan said: “We are over the moon to have been nominated by Judith. I like caring for others whether is it picking up prescriptions and shopping, or cooking meals. I like to help those who are less able as I would hope others would do the same when I am less able.”

Neighbour Judith Brooks, who is thankful for the help Mr and Mrs Whelan give to her, said: “Margaret and Peter deserve to win the Carer of the Year Award because they always take time to help older residents on our estate.

“They make meals, collect prescriptions, do shopping and lots of other small jobs that aren’t always easy for older people. This can be day or night; Margaret and Peter go well beyond any ordinary neighbour.

“They also grow small crops and distribute the produce to all the other Monkswood Avenue tenants, never forgetting anyone.

“Margaret and Peter really care about their neighbours – they are very bright stars in our community.”

Anchor housing scheme manager Carole Gardner added: “Mr and Mrs Whelan are a very caring couple; they look out for quite a few people here at Monkswood Avenue, so much so that I call Margaret my number two! I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Whelan!
