A cat from Peckham has been shortlisted for a Best Pet award. Piper, who lives at Anchor’s Greenhive care home in Brayards Road, was nominated by residents and staff for being a faithful furry friend.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Care home resident Kathleen Souka said: “Piper belongs to all of us at Greenhive. She likes to sit on my lap and kiss me. Piper is lovely, like a child. I love her.”

Lilian Smith, who also lives at Greenhive, said: “Piper has brought lots of happiness to us. She often jumps on Kathleen, lies on her chest, puts her two paws around her neck and looks into her eyes. That is love between them two.”

Anchor’s home manager Connie Oppong added: “We are over the moon that Piper is a finalist – she certainly brings happy living to residents and staff at Greenhive so it would make us very proud to win.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
