Chancellor of the Exchequer, Phillip Hammond, used today’s Spring Budget to pledge an additional £2bn for social care over the next 3 years, and a Green Paper on the long term funding of social care to be published later this year.

In response to the 2017 Spring Budget annoucement, Anchor's Chief Executive Jane Ashcroft commented:

"It is good that the Chancellor has recognised the pressure on social care and its importance for individuals and in managing demand for the NHS. The increasing needs of our ageing society mean the issue is becoming more pressing every day. Without significant change, social care funding was looking increasingly like a car crash waiting to happen. The additional funding in the short term buys some time. But it remains to be seen whether the planned Green Paper can avert disaster.

"We agree that a fundamental review is required, but it needs to happen quickly. It is important that a new system is implemented in this parliament.

"Detail will be key – with most services provided by the independent sector, it will be critical that the additional funds reach the people who need it and are not lost in the system."
