In a bid to help older people in Manchester stay healthy and safe this winter, Anchor has teamed up with the Age Friendly Manchester team at Manchester City Council to hold a special Getting Ready for Winter public event.
The event, taking place between 10am – 2pm on 9th December at Anchor Court retirement housing scheme in Cheetham, will provide the local community with a wealth of free advice and an opportunity to speak to local professionals.
Free information will be available on age-related financial support and special winter benefits, tips on how to keep the home warm, as well as advice on keeping fit, healthy and active and details of social activities available locally.
Shabbir Lorgat, Anchor Community Partnership Manager for North West and Yorkshire says: “At Anchor we know that many older people can find winter a difficult season. The days are cold, the dark hours are long and heating costs are expensive.
“Overall there is a decline in health and an increase in accidents amongst older people during winter and it’s an important public health issue. Loneliness and isolation amongst older people is also a big concern and this can get worse during the winter months.
“We hope this free event run with the Age Friendly Manchester team, will help to signpost older people to the array of services that are available to them and help people stay safe physically and mentally, and feel confident that with the right planning, they can worry less and continue to enjoy their life despite the change in weather.”
The Getting Ready for Winter event will also provide advice regarding the benefits of living in housing for the over 55s, commonly known as retirement housing.
Shabbir comments: “Retirement housing is a fantastic way to live if you are over 55. Not only do you have the advantage of living independently but you have the added benefit of a safe and secure environment. The rent is affordable and includes heating and hot water as well as property maintenance so it’s really worth considering.”
