A tenant from Newcastle has been highly commended for a Community Champion award. Alacia Elliott, 83, who lives at Anchor’s Sandyford Park in Jesmond, was nominated by estate manager Glynis Fielding for always going the extra mile helping her community.

Over 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in May 2014 with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.

Alacia Elliott, who has lived at Sandyford Park for seven years, is thrilled to be highly commended in the Community Champion category. She said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated by Glynis. It is important to have a good community spirit. I like to organise fun activities for everyone at Sandyford Park to get involved in.”

Anchor’s estate manager Glynis Fielding, who is impressed by everything Alacia does for the Sandyford Park community, said: “Alacia is a real superstar, always organising something for all the tenants to get involved in.

“For the past seven years, Alacia has run a gentle fitness class in the communal lounge every week. She’s helped so many Sandyford Park tenants to improve their health by providing a safe, welcoming environment for them to exercise.

“I have also seen a huge improvement in many people’s wellbeing, as Alacia can persuade even the most reluctant tenants to get involved with the social activities we organise and become a valued member of our little community.

“Alacia goes the extra mile in whatever she does and always puts other people before herself. I am so proud to have her living at Sandyford Park.”
