A Nottingham care home resident has been shortlisted for a Community Champion award. Bernard Beilby, 92, who lives at Anchor’s Annesley Lodge in Hucknall, was nominated by the care team for going the extra mile helping his community.
Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.
Mr Beilby is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Community Champion Award. He said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated. It is so important to have a good community spirit. I like to help organising activities for Annesley Lodge and the local community to get involved in.”
Local history buff Bernard has a big collection of old photographs of Nottingham and the surrounding areas, which he often brings out to share with other residents for reminiscence activities. He also gives history talks to the local school.
Anchor’s home manager Barbara Marriott, who appreciates the difference Bernard makes to his community, said: “Bernard is incredible. He deserves to win this award, as he gives up his time so freely and selflessly, sharing his history knowledge with us all. Bernard always goes out of his way to put a smile on people’s faces.”
A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
