A tenant from Cramlington has been highly commended for a Silver Surfer award. Roy Bitmead, 77, who lives at Anchor’s Grenville Court in Megstone Avenue, was nominated by George Daly for always going the extra mile helping his neighbours with their technology skills.

Over 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in May with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.

Roy Bitmead, who has lived at Grenville Court for nine years, is thrilled to be highly commended in the Silver Surfer category. He said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated by George. Just because we are of an older generation doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep up with the latest technology. I like to help my neighbours whether it is teaching them how to use the internet or helping them order their online shopping.”

Neighbour George Daly, who is thankful for the help Roy gives to him, said: “Roy deserves to win the Silver Surfer Award. He constantly helps the other tenants with computer queries and shows us how to look up information on the internet. Roy is Mr Fix-It at Grenville Court, going out of his way to lend a hand wherever he can.”
