Year one schoolchildren switch on lights at Berkeley Court care home
Older people at a care home in Leeds have judged the Christmas decorations made by Year one schoolchildren.
Residents at care home Berkeley Court in Chatsworth Road, Harehills, asked school children from Co-op Woodlands Academy to each design and make a decoration as part of Anchor’s Brighten Up Your Local Community event on Thursday (5 December).
The winning decoration was placed on the top of the tree with all the runners up also having their decorations displayed on the tree.
As an extra treat the young designer who won the competition had the grand honour of switching on the Christmas tree lights. The children then joined the residents for a carol singalong.
Resident Fredrick Battersby, 64, who has lived at Berkeley Court for just under a year, dressed up as Santa during the event which will be a lovely surprise for the children and residents.
More than 100 homes across the country run by care home charity Anchor turned on their lights on the same day.
Berkeley Court Manager Paula Finn said the residents love meeting the local schoolchildren.
She said: “All of Anchor’s care homes across the country will be running the decoration competition as part of our national campaign to brighten up our local community because it’s such a great event for our residents to be involved in. They love to get around the tree and sing carols.
“It’s important to organise meaningful activities for our residents as these boost their mental and physical well-being as well as being fun!”
Resident Pamela Edwards, 80, who has lived at Berkeley Court for three months, said she enjoyed judging the competition.
She said: “I enjoyed seeing all the creative decorations the children made as it reminds me of when I was younger. I looked forward to this event as I got to make mince pies and buns for the children. It’s a lovely way to start the Christmas celebrations at Berkeley Court.
“There are so many interesting things to do here. There is always something different going on every day. I particularly enjoy the bingo and arts and crafts sessions.”
