Coventry PFI care home opens

Specialist dementia care home Trinity Lodge is the first of five brand new developments resulting from a partnership between Coventry City Council and Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing, care and support for older people.

As part of Anchor’s 25-year contract with Coventry City Council, Anchor will build and provide care and support services in two specialist dementia care homes, including Trinity Lodge, and three Integrated Care and Housing schemes.

The project forms part of Coventry City Council’s long term strategy for care for older people.

The four other developments are set to open later in 2007 and early 2008.

Anchor PFI Project Manager Hardev Thandy said: “The new facilities will make a huge difference to the lives of many older people in the city and add real value to the local community.

“The success of the project will greatly depend on recruiting and retaining highly motivated people with a real desire to improve the lives of older people.

“As an Investors in People company Anchor has a people focused approach to management and a commitment to training and development.”

The interior of Trinity Lodge has been designed in accordance with Anchor’s work in the field of dementia care, particularly regarding colour. Complex patterns, which may disorientate people with dementia, have been avoided while other colour contrasts and use of natural light ease residents’ perception and navigation.

Anchor Dementia Team Manager  Victoria Metcalfe said: “Our challenge is to create an environment that is sensitive and responsive to long term emotional and physical needs. Through the considered use of colour, we can compensate for the symptoms and effects of dementia.”
