<< Back to News Caring Connie wins top award Connie Oppong, who is the manager of Anchor Homes' Greenhive care home in Brayards Road, Peckham, has been celebrating after being named Care Manager 2005. Mrs Oppong, who has four grown children and fostered six other children, has been at Greenhive since it opened in March 2002. The award was presented at a ceremony hosted by I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here star Rhona Cameron at the Hilton London Metropole. Mrs Oppong said she was amazed to hear she had won. She said: "I was shocked. I just sat there not believing that my name had come up. My son said to me 'Go up and get the award'. That day, I don't think my brain retained anything. "I was really, really delighted to get the award. You don't work for the recognition but when you get the recognition it's nice." Mrs Oppong was nominated for the award by Anchor Homes area manager Philip Mosley. He wrote: 'Connie demonstrates an extremely caring attitude to both residents and staff. She is friendly but firm with staff. Connie always makes time for her residents, to listen to their stories and worries and arranges activities and entertainments for them.' Anchor Trust chief executive John Belcher said: "I'm so proud to have the best care manager in the UK. Connie's win reflects the hard work and thoughtful, considerate attitude we expect of staff at all our homes. It's great to see that dedication recognised." Mrs Oppong joined Anchor from Southwark Council after the two organisations struck a deal for Anchor to replace the local authority's care homes with four state-of-the-art new homes. The 2005 Care Awards are organised by Caring Times magazine, the management magazine for the long-term care sector. The ceremony was held on 26 November 2005.
