Anchor Homes’ catering wins national award

Anchor Homes’ catering team clinched the award for care of older people at Tuesday’s (5 December) Guardian Public Services awards. The awards, run by The Guardian newspaper, are designed to recognise high levels of service and innovation in the public sector. The awards evening was held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on Tuesday.

Collecting the award on behalf of the team was Training & Development Manager Paul Flood who was part of the team that created the UK’s first catering course for care home chefs: Cater Craft. Anchor Homes’ catering team also changed how Anchor residents order their meals this year. The new system means that residents no longer order in advance and instead can see and smell their meals at the table before choosing.

Residents are now enjoying their mealtimes even more and becoming more adventurous in their choices: even if they don’t know what a meal is from its name they can choose it because it looks and smells good.

Paul Flood said: “Winning this award is a real honour. There has been a lot of attention on school meals over the past year so it’s great to bring the spotlight onto care home food. This award shows that it can be appetising, nutritious and enjoyable – it’s just so important for our residents.”

Anchor Trust Managing Director of Care Services Jane Ashcroft said: “It’s been a great year for Anchor Homes’ catering; a lot has been achieved. The team’s focus is always on how to improve mealtimes for our residents. This award recognises and rewards their hard work, dedication and commitment.”
