A grandparent from Amble has been shortlisted for a Grandparent of the Year award. Penny Bingham, who lives at Anchor’s West Court in West Street, was nominated by her neighbours for always putting her family first.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Penny is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Grandparent of the Year Award. She said: “I am over the moon to be up for this award. I love my family; they keep me young. It gives me great pleasure when I can help them out and see smiles on their faces.”

Neighbour Anita Watson, who nominated Penny for her devotion to the family, said: “Penny is a very caring grandmother to two beautiful girls. She has them after school most days and takes great care of them, helping with their activities and introducing them to everyone.

“She also shares looking after her son’s dog, Billy - a treasure, so full of fun. She is a wonderful cook, not just for family but making tasty scones for her church and West Court events like cake sales. She is an all-round lovely, caring person, who makes me feel happy for her kindness.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
