A Redcar pensioner has been shortlisted for an Extraordinary Talent award. Wendy Lynch, who lives at Anchor’s Coatham Lodge in Coatham Road, was nominated by four neighbours for her artistic abilities.
Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.
Wendy is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Extraordinary Talent Award. She said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated – and by so many people, I’m blown away. Just because we are of an older generation doesn’t mean we can’t have fun, creative hobbies and learn new skills.”
Neighbour Betty Lyons, who is impressed by Wendy’s talents, said: “Wendy is a lady of extraordinary talent on two levels – firstly, her capabilities as an artist and secondly, her natural ability to teach.
“Wendy’s limitless talent takes varied forms and styles, and creating of any kind poses her no problems. Knitted creations abound, including whole nativity scenes, and card craft as well to name a few.
“Having faced adversity, Wendy found her way forward by helping others, showing compassion and sound common sense with any advice given (either on a personal level or with her artistic talents). Our home would be a lesser place without her.”
Linda Buxton, another neighbour who admires Wendy’s art skills, added: “She helps us learn to paint and gives hours each week, for six or seven weeks at a time, teaching us artistic effects in a good, joyful and light hearted way.
“We are all non-artists and she is turning us into professionals. Soon we are having an art exhibition that would be worth being in the Tate Modern.”
Angela Dean, who also attends Wendy’s art classes, commented: “Thanks to Wendy I have produced paintings I am proud to put on my own walls. Family are even asking me to do them one! I can’t praise her enough.”
A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
