A pair of twinkle-toed dancers representing Orchard Garden care home in Lingfield have won first prize at the regional final of a Strictly Come Dancing competition.
This is the third year running that Orchard Court have won the regional event, with this year’s winners Stella Mendoza and volunteer John Twyman putting on a brilliant show dancing to I Love You Because, by Johnny Cash.
The finals were held on 15 October and featured finalists from four Anchor care homes across Surrey.
The couples danced to everything from disco to country, entertaining visitors, families and the judges.
The judges this year were Julie Phillips, from First Community Health, Jackie Cridlin, Anchor’s Community Partnership Manager, and Joe Patterson, home manager from Anchor’s new Mayflower Court care home in Southampton.
Sue Strange, Activities Co-ordinator at Orchard Court said: “The judges were enthralled throughout the performances and said it was an extremely difficult job to decide on a winner.
“The dancers were praised for their enthusiasm, costuming and choreography. After much deliberation, Orchard Court were declared the winners.
“Our winners were Stella Mendoza, a regular user of our Orchard Club day centre and whose sister lives with us, and John Twyman, who is a volunteer and the son of another of our residents.”
Sue added: “The evening was a great way to bring local care homes together, to enjoy music and dance and of course bring the TV show alive and here for residents.”
