A care home in Oldham has been praised by its residents in a national survey for the care they receive.

Your Care Rating – the country’s largest and most authoritative survey of care home residents - found that Anchor’s Millfield Care Home, Huddersfield Road, Waterhead, Oldham performed above the national average.

The results from the survey found Millfield Care Home received an overall performance rating of 947 out of 1,000. The national average was 871 out of 1,000.

The nationwide survey is designed to give residents a voice, putting their care at the heart of understanding more about how well care homes perform. The Your Care Rating survey results are also a vital tool for families when they are choosing a care home for a loved one, giving them direct feedback on the views of the most important audience – the residents.

More than 20,000 residents in 1,055 care homes across the UK took part, providing feedback on a range of categories, across four broad themes: staff and care, home comforts, choice and having a say, and quality of life. The OPR score is an overall score based on the results across the four themes.

While Your Care Rating has been designed to give care homes and operators valuable feedback on how each home is performing, it is not a nationwide ranking of the best and worst care homes in the country. When choosing a care home there are many other factors outside of the survey – including cost, location and need for specialist services. Every home caters for different needs and different resident preferences, which is why a like-for-like comparison is not suitable.

The survey was compiled by leading research company Ipsos MORI with input from the care home operators taking part, plus the National Care Forum (NCF) and the English Community Care Association (ECCA).

Maggie Thomas, manager of Millfield Care Home, said: “We’re delighted with our results from the 2013 Your Care Rating survey as it demonstrates how happy our residents are.

“All of our scores across the four main themes are high and it just goes to show that the reality of day-to-day life in a care home such as ours is very good, something which is often at odds with the public’s perception. That said, we still want to get even better and the results give us crucial feedback on where we can build on our achievements.
When choosing a home, families should always ask if it takes part in the Your Care Rating survey, as it is the best guide to show what residents actually think about the care they receive.”

Resident Sylvia Mason 76, who has lived at Millfield since March 2013, said: “I wanted to fill out the survey because it gives us residents the opportunity to provide feedback on the care we receive. I like living here because the staff are very caring and there are lots of meaningful activities organised for us. My favourite activities are singing in the choir, arts and craft and exercising.”
