Residents and staff at a Bradford care home celebrated the official opening of their reminiscence shop after weeks of hard work.

Residents at Anchor’s Ashcroft Care Home on Kelvin Way can now enjoy their own on site shop stocking sweets and toiletries which will also give them the chance to help out with stocking and serving customers.

The shop was officially opened on Friday 9 June by the Lord Mayor and will now be open for Care Home Open Day on 16 June.

The residents had played an active role in deciding what they wanted to be stocked in the shop and what their memories were of their local shops growing up.

Care Home manager Emma Ciccone said “Our residents had been really excited about the Lord Mayor coming in to open the shop.  We’ve also had some great planning sessions discussing residents memories of their local shops and their favourite sweets and treats from when they were young.

One of the things that has really come across is that feeling of local community that local shops used to have and how for many people, that was where they would meet and catch up on the gossip, we’re hoping we can involve the community in our shop to help re-create that feeling.”

Activities coordinator Karen Sefton said “For our residents living with dementia the shop will be a great way to engage with them and keep them involved with on-going activities, they can’t wait to get in and help out, the shop can also be used by friends and family visiting and has already become a real talking point.
