Two tenants from Clifton in York have been shortlisted for a Best Neighbour award. Dennis and Ruby Walls, 85 and 83 years old, who live at Anchor’s Guardian Court in Water Lane, were nominated by a number of tenants for always putting their neighbours first.

Almost 300 nominations were received for the 2016 Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards launched in September with six categories: Green-fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Creative Champion, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Dennis and Ruby Walls, who have lived at Guardian Court for three years, said the nomination have come as a shock. They said: “It’s lovely to know someone thinks we’re good neighbours.”

Maurice Coser, who was one of the Guardian Court tenants to nominate the couple, said: “They are a lovely and considerate couple who will be very surprised to receive this nomination. Even their dog Buster is well behaved!”

A customer panel has come together to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in January 2017.
