A tenant from Hessle in East Riding of Yorkshire has been shortlisted for a Best Neighbour award. Hilary Weston, 70 years old, who lives at Anchor’s Laburnum Court, was nominated by Angie Allison, Scheme Manager, for always putting her neighbours needs before her own.

Almost 300 nominations were received for the 2016 Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards launched in September with six categories: Green-fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Creative Champion, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Hilary Weston, who has lived at Laburnum Court for six years, said she was left in total shock but very honoured when she was informed of the nomination.

“The things I do are hopefully for the enjoyment and peace of mind of everyone at Laburnum. I enjoy organising things to bring people together and there’s nothing better than hearing lots of laughter and chatter in the corridors and lounge here. Nothing I do is a chore and I won’t stop whilst everyone is happy.”

Angie Allison, who nominated Hilary, said: “She will go out in all sorts of weather to make sure the not so abled tenants have plenty of activities to keep them organised. She always puts everyone else’s needs before her own – she is a true champion for her neighbours.”

A customer panel has come together to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in January 2017.
