Peckham girl, Winnifred Williams has celebrated her 106 birthday with friends at Greenhive care home in Brayards Road, Peckham.

The Deputy Mayor of Southwark, councillor Charlie Smith came along to wish Winnie a very happy birthday and entertainment was provided by a live band.

When asked how she felt Winnie said: “I’m having a very good time thank you.”

Storied were told of her life and her best friend Grace Watson said: “I met Winne 35 years ago when I was working in another care home in Sumner Road before she moved to Greenhive in 2002. She always said ‘you must come and visit, so I have every year.”

Winnie was born in 1910 – the year before George V was crowned King – and she attended Rockingham Road Elementary School in New Kent Road. She went on to work as a nurse in Leytonstone.

Grace continued: “Winnie loves music and has hundreds of vinyl records and CDs, and she was a great dancer. Her favourite artists are Aled Jones, Anne Shelton and Doris Day.”
