A grandfather from Chichester has been highly commended for a gardening award. Desmond Hodnett, 71, who lives at Anchor’s Augusta Court on Winterbourne Road, was nominated by Simanti Nandi for his hard work in the communal gardens.
Over 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not for profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in May with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.
Desmond Hodnett, who has lived at Augusta Court for a year, is thrilled to be highly commended in the Green Fingered Customer category. He said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated by Simanti. I love gardening as it keeps me fit. It brings me great pleasure when others get enjoyment from the communal gardens.”
Anchor care home manager Simanti Nandi, who appreciates the work Desmond has carried out in the gardens, said: “At Augusta Court, mornings would be incomplete without the welcoming sight of all our beautiful blooms and Des waving hello whilst working in the garden.
“He puts his remarkable tenacity and brilliant zeal towards the upkeep of our sensory garden with gorgeous colours for all the residents, visitors and staff to enjoy.
“Des has also grown and sold pot plants to raise money for our amenities fund, which enables the home’s activity coordinator to plan fun sessions and trips for everyone.
“He’s there on the grounds with his gardener’s hat on, rain or shine – he never tires. Des has worked with the crop industry all his life, and that shows in the wonderful things he has achieved at Augusta Court.”
A customer panel came together before Christmas to judge those nominated, and winners of the six categories will be announced at the end of January.
