A tenant from Lewisham has been highly commended for a Best Neighbour award. Stef Deveraux, 64, who lives at Anchor’s Tony Law House in Lee Green, was nominated by Irene Lazarus for helping her get through cancer.
Over 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in May 2014 with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.
Stef Deveraux, who has lived at Tony Law House for almost eight years, is thrilled to be highly commended in the Best Neighbour category. She said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated by Irene. It is important to have good neighbours. I like to help others, whether it is to be there with a cup of tea for a chat or to help someone with their shopping.”
Irene Lazarus, who lived next door to Stef before moving to another Anchor scheme in Oxford, said: “Stef is the best neighbour anyone could hope for.
“When I was diagnosed with cancer, she came to every hospital appointment with me and was my sounding board for everything the doctors said – I was so shocked that it would have gone in one ear and out the other without her support.
“Stef would call my son and daughter twice a week to let them know what was going on, and when I came round from having my lymph nodes removed she was there waiting.
“Stef is my guardian angel and I can never thank her enough.”
A customer panel came together before Christmas to judge those nominated, and winners of the six categories were announced at the end of January.
