Legendary television and radio broadcaster Gloria Hunniford, attended Anchor’s Strictly Dancing Final at West Hall care home in West Byfleet, Surrey on Friday 1 November. Joined by hundreds of Anchor residents and employees, she watched as eight acts competed for the top prizes at the prestigious award-winning care home.
After months of rehearsals and dance competitions across the South, Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for older people, hosted the glitzy finale which was judged by Dance Development Officer for the Surrey Arts Team, Sarah Gilmartin, Director of the National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People, Sylvie Silver, Anchor Chief Executive, Jane Ashcroft with Gloria Hunniford as guest judge.
Attendees were treated to Waltz and Rock & Roll performances and the top prizes were presented to Jean Twyman and Craig Young from Orchard Court (Lingfield); Eric and Janice Stevens from Prospect Place (Epsom) and Faith Cordy and Fred Pinder from St Clements Court (Eastbourne).
Inspired by the BBC prime time television show, on which Gloria Hunniford was a contestant, Anchor created the dancing competition to promote the benefits of staying active in older age.
Gloria Hunniford said, “Dancing is a great way to get fit and have lots of fun along the way. Anchor’s Strictly Dance Competition has been a fabulous event and it’s just lovely to see so many people get together and have a great time.”
Anchor Chief Executive, Jane Ashcroft, said, ‘We like to organise activities which help boost mental and physical well-being in our residents. The dance competition has been a great way to help people keep active, get together and celebrate the talents of our residents.”
Winner Janice Stevens said, “I’m delighted to win! It’s a dream come true. It was a fantastically organised event and thoroughly enjoyable. Eric and I met dancing and have been dancing together for 10 years. Many thanks to Anchor for organising this event, we are so pleased to win, our trophy will take pride of place on the mantelpiece.”
