Brilliant news for older people this week as Claire Keatinge has been appointed the first Commissioner for Older People in Northern Ireland.
The need for a dedicated voice for older people was recognised in Northern Ireland and in response the We Agree campaign was launched by Age NI and Age Sector Platform.
Their aim was to ensure that the needs of older people were “at the forefront of the decision making process” in Northern Ireland and the appointment of Ms Keatinge is a huge success for everyone with older people's issues at heart.
As Commissioner, Ms Keatinge will play a key role in challenging discrimination, promoting positive attitudes and encouraging the participation of older people in public life.
We Agree and Grey Pride are campaigns with much in common and this news is massively encouraging, it brings renewed strength to our call on the Government to appoint a Minister with explicit responsibility for representing older people at Cabinet level.
