Through the Resident’s Questionnaire about their coronation memories, staff at Anchor’s Birchlands care home in Englefield Green discovered that two customers living at the home had never seen the Queen in person before – not even from a distance!
Jill told staff that she was in Cyprus with her parents at the time of the coronation which meant she was unable to take part in any of the celebrations or see the queen in real life.
Similarly, John had never been given the opportunity to see the Queen but has always dreamed of one day getting the chance.
Staff at the care home decided that the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration would be the perfect opportunity to make their dreams come true.
Plans were set in place and transport was booked. On the morning of Wednesday 20 April packed lunches were prepared and after an early start and a lovely breakfast, John and Jill were ready to go!
The minibus dropped the excited duo at Windsor as the crowds were beginning to gather in preparation for the special event, but John and Jill were determined to find a good vantage point.
Ice creams in hand and Union flags at the ready, the pair were able to enjoy the building atmosphere and watch as the final preparations were put in place for the Queen’s arrival.
At last the roar of the crowd heralded the coming of Her Majesty, accompanied by Prince Charles, and the Birchlands residents were finally able to see the Queen, hear her speak, and be a small part of her official 90th birthday celebrations. It was a magical experience for everyone involved and certainly one that Jill and John will cherish.
Kinga Odendaal, Home Manager at Birchlands said: “We were thrilled to make this special dream come true for Jill and John and we’re looking forward to helping our other residents achieve their dreams too.”
