South Shields MP David Miliband has shown his support for our call for the Government by signing our petition.
On Friday David Miliband attended afternoon tea at St Mary’s Court, a retirement housing scheme in his constituency of South Shields, and met Grey Pride supporters to hear why they believe the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Older People is so important.
The Grey Priders explained that whilst older people are fast becoming one of the largest groups in the country, making up 40 per cent of voters, there is no government minister dedicated to ensuring the issues that affect them are properly addressed.
Pension reform, local authority cuts and the freezing of the winter fuel allowance were cited as key examples.
During his visit Mr Miliband signed our official petition and later publicised his support for the campaign on Twitter, tweeting: "No good reason for Tories to oppose Minister for Older People. Well done to Anchor Housing and its residents."
Our campaign to ensure Britain's older people will start being heard at the very highest level, continues to go from strength to strength. Last week our combined paper and online signatures came in at over 45,000 and we now have 59 MPs signed up to our Early Day Motion.
Our aim is to get 100,000 signatures by autumn, so with a long way still to go, every signature counts! Please keep spreading the word.
