A North Harrow couple has been shortlisted for a Best Neighbour award. Josette and Bernard Blackburn, who live at Anchor’s Bladon Gardens off Blenheim Road, were nominated by their neighbours for always going the extra mile to help.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Mr and Mrs Blackburn are thrilled to be shortlisted for the Best Neighbour Award. Bernard said: “We are over the moon to have been nominated. It is so important to have good neighbours. We like to help others, even if it is just to be there with a cup of tea and a chat when someone needs a friend.”

Neighbour Mrs Messarides, who is thankful for the help Josette and Bernard give to her, said: “Josette and Bernard are the best neighbours you could imagine.

“After I had a knee replacement, they visited me every day with soup and cake, and insisted on driving me every time I needed to go back to the doctors. Later, I was nervous about using public transport, so Josette came with me until I got my confidence. I am fully recovered now but will be forever grateful.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
