A Kent pensioner has won a Best Neighbour award.
Brian Cutler, who lives at Anchor’s Harmer Court retirement housing scheme in Southborough, was nominated by 15 neighbours for always going the extra mile. A customer panel of judges met in December 2015 and was very impressed by his efforts.
Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August 2015 with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.
Mr Cutler is thrilled to receive the Best Neighbour Award. He said: “It is important to have good neighbours. I like to support others, whether it is to go and help someone with their shopping or just be there for a cup of tea.”
Gill Court, manager at Harmer Court, commented: “Brian makes such a difference to the ambience here. He puts his name forward for whatever needs doing, whether it is helping with an event, gardening, cooking or just to sit and have a chat.”
Neighbour Sue LeCoq, who is thankful for the help Brian gives to her, said: “Brian is the best neighbour anyone could hope for. I will be 100 in the next few months and am in a wheelchair - Brian checks on me every day. He always goes out of his way to put a smile on his neighbours’ faces.”
George Smith, another Harmer Court resident, added: “Brian has a big heart and is very kind and generous. He loves to cook for us all and we very much enjoy the benefits!”
Carol-Grace Buckman, who enjoys Brian’s baking, said: “Harmer Court is blessed by Brian’s continual supply of homemade cakes, bread pudding and particularly famous sausage rolls. Brian recently organised a harvest lunch, bringing residents together for a wonderful tea, which brought great joy and fun to us all.”
Another neighbour, Betty Taylor, added: “Brian installed an aviary in the garden with a number of different species of birds, which have brought delight and amazement to us all. He also got us a pair of budgies which live in our front hallway. I have difficulty walking so I like to sit and watch them flying around.”
