A tenant from Rochester has been shortlisted for a Best Neighbour award. Alan Jenner, who lives at Anchor’s Sheridan Court in Borstal Street, was nominated by his neighbours for always going the extra mile to help.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Mr Jenner is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Best Neighbour Award. He said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated. It is important to have good neighbours. I like to help others, whether it is to be there with a cup of tea and a chat or to go and help someone with their shopping.”

Neighbour Olive Jackson, 94, who is thankful for the help Alan gives to her, said: “Alan is one in a million. He does so many kind things for me and many other residents, really going out of his way to help.

“As I am housebound, Alan posts my talking books, collects meals for me, does odd jobs around the flat and always sees me to my door safely if I’ve been out. He will never accept anything in return – it is all out of the goodness of his heart.

“Thanks to Alan, I always know someone cares about me.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
