A Hook pensioner has been shortlisted for a Best Neighbour award. Gerry DaSilva, who lives at Anchor’s Berry Court in Station Road, was nominated by scheme manager Samantha Doble for always going the extra mile to help his neighbours.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Gerry DaSilva, who has lived at Berry Court for four years, is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Best Neighbour Award. He said: “I am over the moon to be up for an award. It is important to have good neighbours. I like to help others, whether it is to be there with a cup of tea and a chat or to go and help someone with their shopping.”

Anchor’s housing scheme manager Samantha Doble said: “Gerry is always there to lend a helping hand to any of his neighbours, whether it be fixing their television or walking their dog. He bakes cakes every Tuesday for our coffee morning - we must have had well over 150 cakes now over the years.

“What stands out to me is the support that Gerry shows for one resident who is living with dementia. He is a true friend and support for this lady, going out with her every day and encouraging her to come along to social events. What more could you ask of a neighbour?”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
