An Essex pensioner has been shortlisted for a Community Champion award.

Della Churchill, who lives at Anchor’s The Sheritons in Rayleigh, was nominated by her retirement housing scheme manager Mark Broad for always going the extra mile helping her community.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Della is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Community Champion Award. She said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated. It is important to have a good community spirit. I like to help the community organising trips and activities for The Sheritons and the local community to get involved in.”

Della organises trips for her neighbours to enjoy, runs the library at The Sheritons and recently helped set up a Residents Association. She juggles this with work at a local museum, carrying out historical research.

Anchor’s scheme manager Mark Broad, who appreciates the difference Della makes to the community, said: “Della is a real star. She deserves to win, as she always gives up her time organising trips and activities - she never goes herself, but happy to book them for others to enjoy! Della goes out of her way to make people smile.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
