A Hull pensioner has been shortlisted for a Community Champion award. Alfred Keable, who lives at Anchor’s Grove House in Beverley Road, was nominated by scheme manager Tina Ward for always going the extra mile helping his community.

Almost 300 nominations were sent in for the Happy Living Awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider. The awards were launched in August with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Extraordinary Talent, Grandparent of the Year, Community Champion and Best Pet.

Alfred Keable, who has lived at Grove House for two years, is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Community Champion Award. He said: “I am over the moon to have been nominated. It is important to have a good community spirit. I like to help the community organising trips and activities for Grove House and the local community to get involved in.”

Tina Ward, manager at Anchor’s Grove House, who appreciates the difference Mr Keable makes to his community, said: “Alf is a real star, always organising something for us all to get involved in. He secured Lottery funding to get computers and pool tables for the scheme, and organises regular tai chi classes. Alf always goes out of his way to put a smile on all of our faces.”

A customer panel will be coming together later this month to judge those shortlisted, and winners of the six categories will be announced in December.
