Staying safe online

With more and more of us using smart phones and tablets, it is important to be alert to the risk of scammers attempting to access your personal information. 

“Phishing” is the fraudulent act of emailing a person in order to obtain their personal/financial information such as passwords and credit card or bank account details. These emails often include a link to a bogus website encouraging you to enter your personal details. Recent scams have included emails that appear to come from HMRC telling people they are owed a tax rebate. 

Another new approach includes people’s home addresses in the emails, which can fool people into thinking the emails are genuine.
